Objectives: 1) Explain the most important theme(s) revealed by the author in my section of _The Joy Luck Club_. 2) Be sure to: A) follow all style rules B) give a clear opening statement that clearly identifies the subject In ââ¬Å"Double Faceâ⬠of _The Joy Luck Club_, Lindo Jong recounts her journey coming into America as she sits in Waverlyââ¬â¢s hairstylist, Mr. Roryââ¬â¢s, chair, preparing for Waverlyââ¬â¢s second wedding. The symbolism surrounding Waverly and her motherââ¬â¢s conversation through the salon mirror subtly imply an underlying theme of a lack of communication. Waverly and her mother seem to be talking in different worlds as both daughter mother struggle to understand each otherââ¬â¢s culture. For example, Lindo tells Waverly that the people in China ââ¬Å"already know that [she] is an outsider,â⬠which confuses Waverly, because the Americanized Waverly cannot understand Lindoââ¬â¢s Chinese metaphors. Afterwards, as Waverly and her mother meet for coffee, Waverly remarks to Lindo that she ââ¬Å"is her own personâ⬠, only to have Lindo question herself about ââ¬Å"when [she has] given [Waverly] up;â⬠due to Lindoââ¬â¢s lack of understanding of ââ¬Å"Americanismsâ⬠, Waverlyââ¬â¢s comment confuses Lindo. Later, Waverly and Lindo speak through the ââ¬Å"mirrorâ⬠at the salon to each otherââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"reflectionsâ⬠. Since speaking through mirrors is an ââ¬Å"American custom,â⬠Lindo, a traditional Chinese woman who is accustomed to the custom of speaking directly to her elders, finds this s trange. While at Mr. Roryââ¬â¢s salon, Waverly shows a complete lack of respect for her mother. For example, Waverly openly criticizes her motherââ¬â¢s head, as if Lindo ââ¬Å"was not there,â⬠clearly disregarding her motherââ¬â¢s existence. Then, Waverlyà speaks to Lindo in a loud voice, as if Lindoà has ââ¬Å"lost her hearing,â⬠condescendingly to her own mother. Furthermore, when Mr. Rory tells Waverly how much she and Lindo look alike, Waverlyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"eyes and smileâ⬠¦ narrowâ⬠¦ [like] a catâ⬠¦ before it bites,â⬠as if Waverly is disgusted for resembling her mother. Waverlyââ¬â¢s incomplete understanding of Lindo as a ââ¬Å"backwards old womanâ⬠who cannot understand American customs, makes her ashamed. Due to a lack of understanding, Lindo and Waverly must change themselves using double faces for each other to understand their thoughts. For example, after Waverly loudly asks Lindo what kind of hairstyle she wanted, Lindo smiled using her ââ¬Å"American faceâ⬠, a face she says her daughter cannot understand, for it masks her true feelings. However, Lindo later smiles with her ââ¬Å"Chinese faceâ⬠when Mr. Rory remarks that it was ââ¬Å"uncanny how much [Waverly and Lindo] looked alike.â⬠After, Lindo is surprised when Waverly tells Lindo that ââ¬Å"[people] know that [they] are two-faced.â⬠Misunderstanding her daughter, Lindo thinks she must ââ¬Å"sacrifice the other [face]â⬠if she chooses to show one, whereas Waverly just simply mean to say that they can use their double face to their advantage. New conclusion: In summary, this section hints at the difficulties caused by a lack of understandingà between Lindo and Waverly, as well as the difference in cultures, as both struggle to relate toà each other through mixed messages and foreign customs, only to add to their confusion, propelling the two endlessly in the same cycle. Due to these differences, Lindo and Waverly fail to understand each otherââ¬â¢s true intentions and personalities, as these misinterpretations reoccur in the rest of the stories. Ultimately, such misunderstandings cause an emotional distance that is found between Lindo and Waverly, as well as with the otherà members of the _Joy Luck Club_. Old conclusion: In summary, this section hints at the difficulties caused by a lack of understanding between Lindo and Waverly, as well as the difference in cultures, as both struggle to relate to each other through mixed messages and foreign customs, only to add to their confusion, propelling the two endlessly in the same cycle. What was wrong: The old conclusion merely restated the thesis, without explaining its significance to the subject, or how it affects the whole story.

The foothold would also make it possible for England to exploit available resources, convert pagans to Christianity, claim territory and institute a base from which to strategically attack Spanish ships. However, as a result of poor associations with the indigenous populace, improper geographical timing of colony establishment and inefficient links with the parent country due to foreign conflicts, the settlers of this original English-American colony were destined to fail. The initiative of colonizing the North American coast was set in motion soon after Queen Elizabeth one gave an official charter to Sir Walter Raleigh to establish a colony in a suitable location. After acquiring formal approval from the Queen in 1584, Sir Raleigh created and funded a scouting expedition with the sole mandate of exploring the American coastline and finding a perfect spot to establish the proposed colony. The scout team, led by Captains Arthur Barlow and Phillip Amadas came back with a positive report of the location, that is, Roanoke Island; a land mass off the shore of contemporary North Carolina. The scouts described the Island with glowing terms, praising it for its fertility and pleasant nature. They also reported that Roanoke was occupied by friendly and loving people. Judging from the enthusiastic report, Raleigh and others decided that the Islandââ¬â¢s sheltered and secure shores formed a perfect location to establish Englandââ¬â¢s maiden colony in this N ew World. In the year 1985, after receiving the Queen's financial support and blessing, the first boatload of colonists set sail for the North American coast (Clark n.pg). The initial 100 men, who went to Roanoke Island primarily comprised of soldiers. The men established a settlement on the northern side of Roanoke Island and immediately built a fort. Since they did not have sufficient supplies, these initial colonists exchanged trinkets and beads to the native populace for food and other basic necessities (Clark n.pg). As winter began and food increasingly became scarce, tension heightened between the locals and the English settlers. The expeditions also deteriorated the original kindness that the Native Americans felt toward the settlers. This is because the colonists regularly abducted tribal leaders with the intent of holding them in exchange for scarce supplies. The English settlers treated the locals with disrespect in spite of the fact that they relied on them for basic supp lies. After suffering such a difficult winter, the supply ships still did not arrive as expected in spring. By this time there was actual conflict between the locals and the settlers. Following the constant war with Native Americans, deprivation of food and becoming impatient waiting for the overdue supplies fleet, the colonists decided to travel back home. The overdue supply ships arrived just two weeks later and found the colony abandoned. The fleet left about 15 men to take care of the English settlement in readiness for the next group or recruits (Kupperman 12-25). After the first failure, Sir Raleigh decided to take another attempt at English settlement in Roanoke. In an organization with high degree of bureaucracy and hierarchy, it is highly possible that many employees feel unused, disrespected and anonymous. However, as the organization becomes flat, employees are more likely to feel equal and important. The Means of Motivating Employees My efforts to motivate employees are based on the understanding that everyone has the desire to be justly and fairly acknowledged and appreciated in public. Thus, my philosophy will be to ââ¬Ëapplaud in public and reproach in privateââ¬â¢. First of all, when employees achieve something, recognition and appreciation will be ensured in public. As studies show, motivation and positive feedback are positively correlated to work performance and various other factors like employee retention. Another important point is that this reward and recognition will be as fair and open as possible. This is so because if employees feel that certain employees are given a more favorable treatment, there will be further decline in their morale. So, when there is reward or recognition, it will be ensured that the reward system is fair and transparent. There are various studies which support this opinion. To illustrate, Wayne, Shore, Bommer &Tetrick (2002) proved t hat perceived organizational support is influenced by various factors including leader-member exchange, procedural and distributive justice, and feelings of inclusion and recognition. Also, the scholars point out that reward and punishment systems are important factors in deciding perceived organizational support. The next important point is punishment. It is highly necessary to be careful about using punishments because punishment has less positive and more negative effects, according to scholars. According to Milbourn (1996), punishment only curbs an undesirable behavior; and it does not make an employee demonstrate a desirable behavior. The mere fact is that punishment leads to fear, psychological distress and the feeling of humiliation, especially when it happens in public. So, my assumption is to replace punishment with positive reinforcement and one-to-one guidance. First of all, there will be clear guidelines regarding every aspect of the workplace and employee conduct. Adher ence to the same will be appreciated and applauded in public. When it is found that an employee errs, the same will be immediately brought to his notice. However, when it is found that the mistake is even more serious, the employee will be met in private and the details discussed without the fear of punishment. Thus, by using positive reinforcement instead of punishment, an organization can increase the possibility of developing desirable behavior in employees.
